Hellraiser: Bloodlines is the 1996 AD addition to the Clive Barker inspired Hellraiser franchise. Barker, who authored the original book upon which the franchise is based, has noted that the storyline stems from his interest in sadomasochistic (S&M) perversion. By the way no, I do not recommend these movies as they are very violent and graphic and some were clearly written/directed by perverts.
The premise of the mythos is that there god of the underworld/hell is Leviathan who views the world of flesh to be too chaotic. Thus, he routinely dispatches cenobites (who say that they are angles to some and demons to others) who appear to people who conjure them, summoning them to offer them some sort of extreme pleasure.
In any case, this sequel of sequels was directed by Kevin Yagher and Alan Smithee who added an interesting transhuman twist. The premise is that “In the 22nd century a brilliant scientist strives to banish the evil that his ancestor had unwittingly leashed upon the world.” He seeks to actually capture the main cenobite, Pinhead, and permanently incarcerate him.
Within the franchise, cenobites were once humans who, like many others, made contact with Leviathan’s minions via the usage of a puzzle box which functions like a styled Ouija board—to keep it simple.
Well, the brilliant scientist sets his trap aboard a spacecraft. Now, since the cenobites appear to they who use the box he scientist builds a robot via which he manipulates the box. To make a long story short my interest is in the interaction between high tech (transhumanism in terms of acting via a robot proxy, in this case) and the occult.
As you can see from my parsed video on Transhuman Hollywood, pop-culture (or, pop-occulture) is constantly weaving tales which combine high tech and the occult (and evolution).
Thus, this is an entry into that category.
